About NSS


  • NSS is a voluntary association of young people in colleges, universities and at +2 level.
  • Organized by the students and teachers through their combined participation in community service.
  • The cardinal principle of the NSS programme is to get a sense of involvement in the task of Nation building.
  • The scheme was launched in Gandhiji’s Centenary Year – 1969.
  • 24th September is celebrated every year as NSS Day with various programmes and activities.
  • It is aimed at developing student’s personality through community service.

NSS in Poompuhar College

  • NSS constitutes of four units and is always engaged in varied community-oriented programmes.
  • It is involved in maintaining the cleanliness of college campus.
  • As college is under the management of Hindu Religious Endowment, temple cleaning and hundiyal money counting were done by NSS unit periodically.
  • In addition, awareness right to vote and prevention against COVID-19 was conducted by our volunteers.
  • Vaccination camps and awareness on social distancing during the pandemic period had a great impact on the society.

Objectives

  • To enable the students to understand the community in which they work.
  • To identify the needs and problems of the community and the solution to their needs.
  • To acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude.
  • To encourage national integration and develop the capacity to meet emergencies and national disasters.

Motto of NSS


“NOT ME BUT YOU”

  • Volunteers of NSS believe in the philosophy, “not me but you” echoing the vision of Gandhiji.
  • The aim of NSS is to demonstrate this motto in day-to-day programmes.

NSS Badge


  • The Konark wheel is the symbol and has eight bars which represents the 24 hours of the day.
  • The badge reminds the NSS volunteers to be in readiness for service of the nation round the clock i.e., for 24 hours.
