About the Department

The Department of Zoology was started in 1978 with UG programme primarily for Boy students. Subsequently, in the academic year 1989-90, it was transformed to co-education department and was upgraded to PG department in 2007-08. In the year 2012-13 department was recognized by Bharathidasan University as research department and then students started pursuing Ph.D. in Zoology and 8 candidates were awarded.

The UG programme of the Department provides strong foundation in the fundamental concepts of various branches of Zoology and in-depth studies in PG programme which includes the following subjects: Invertebrata, Chordata, Biochemistry, Physiology, Cell and Molecular Biology, Ecology, Genetics, Aquaculture, Immunology and Microbiology, Evolution, Biotechnology, Endocrinology, Biostatistics, Environmental Science, Development Biology, Entomology, Vector biology and Poultry science. In addition, PG programme provides Medical Laboratory Techniques, Aquaculture & their by-products, Intellectual Property Rights and Research methodology. The curriculum also includes dissertation work.

PG & Research Department of Zoology is one of the well-established and distinguished department in our college with nine faculties. To its credit department has received funding from various agencies. Three Student Project Schemes from Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology, Chennai, World Wildlife Fund for Olive Ridley turtle walk and Foldscope Research Project funded by Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Govt. of India. FAUNA BORNS, a club of Zoology Department, conducts several programmes for motivating students, create awareness on skill development in life sciences turtle conservation by collecting, shifting eggs to safe areas as well as patrollling the egg laying areas. Coastal cleanup drives conducted every year since 2016 in association with MSSRF, MOEFCC or Ariviyal Palagai. Bird census taken up by faculties and student volunteers in association with Tamil Nadu Forest Department from 2023 onwards. Butterfly Walk lead by faculties to record the diversity of butterflies since 2023. Furthermore, students were trained to bring up in large scale the herbal-based product on mosquito repellency which was developed by one of their faculties. Staff members of Zoology published DNA gene sequences in NCBI GenBank.

Among the faculties, some have received best faculty award, best research paper presentation award and visiting fellowship for conducting research in Department of Science & Technology funded institute. Dr. M. Nalini have earned post-doctoral degree from Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic in 2005 and Andong National University, Republic of Korea in 2008.

Further to its credit, as a mark of the MoU, the department received research funded project from DBT, Govt. of India along with Sun Agro Biotech Research Centre, Chennai. Through MoUs certain research-cum training activities were undertaken which included training gardeners for production of biofertilizers and enable them to identify beneficial and harmful insects. Also, during Covid-19, antibodies were raised for kit development for detection of Covid. The department of Zoology observed the coastal environmental changes in collaboration with M.S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF), Poompuhar since 2012 to till date. Related to this, Beach Clean-up Drive and Patrolling were consistently performed in order to conserve the endangered Olive Ridley turtle.
